An iPhone overheats when its internal temperature climbs past its safe range, usually from heavy use, charging, direct sun, or a failing battery. To cool it, turn it off, take it out of the sun and off the charger, remove the case, and let it rest in a cooler spot. Never put it in a fridge or freezer.

What to do right now

• Stop using it and close heavy apps.
• Unplug it from any charger, wired or wireless.
• Take off the case and move to shade or a cooler room.
• Turn it off if it’s very hot or shows a warning.
• Wait until it feels normal before using or charging again.

Is your iPhone warm or truly overheating?

Warm and overheated are not the same thing.

Warm means the phone feels hotter than usual but keeps working normally. Overheated means the phone has crossed its safe temperature range and starts protecting itself.

Apple designs iPhones to work in air temperatures between 0° and 35°C. Apple says to store the device between -20° and 45°C, and warns that a parked car can exceed that range.

Here’s the part most people miss. Apple lists several everyday moments when a phone feels warmer, including first-time setup, restoring from a backup, a major software update, wireless charging, graphics-heavy games, and streaming high-quality video. That’s normal, and the phone cools when the task ends.

One Apple Community reply puts it simply: real overheating means the phone shuts down or shows a cool-down message. The same thread notes that fast charging pausing at 80% is also expected behaviour.

The Heat Triage system: Green, Amber, Red

Not every hot phone needs the same response. Use this three-zone check to decide how worried to be. It’s a practical framework, not an Apple label.

Zone	What you notice	What to do
Green: warm but normal	Warm during charging, updates, restores, gaming, or video. Everything still works.	Keep going. It will cool when the task ends.
Amber: hot and slowing down	Dimmer screen, slower charging, weak signal, laggy apps, camera flash disabled.	Stop, unplug, remove the case, move to shade. Rest for 10–15 minutes.
Red: stop and get help	Temperature warning screen, a bulging or lifting screen, a burning smell, or it won’t turn on after cooling.	Turn it off, don’t charge it, and get it checked by a professional.

Brand note for you: if the client has repair or support data (for example, how many hot-phone visits turn out to be battery-related), add one real number or case here. That’s your strongest originality upgrade.

Why is my iPhone overheating? The 7 real causes

Seven causes explain almost every case.

1. Charging, especially wireless charging

Charging makes heat because energy moves into the battery. iFixit points out that wireless charging is less efficient, so it makes more heat as a by-product, and suggests taking the phone off the charger if it’s hot.

2. Heavy apps, games and camera use

Games, 4K video and long camera sessions push the processor hard. Apple lists graphics-intensive and camera apps among the activities that warm the phone.

3. Direct sun and hot cars

This is the most Canadian cause of all. Sun on a dashboard, a phone mount in a hot car, or a long afternoon at the cottage dock can push the phone past its range fast. Apple also lists GPS navigation in a car and long camera use in hot conditions as things that can change performance.

4. Weak signal and 5G

When a phone struggles to find signal, its radios work harder. Apple notes that when the interior gets too hot, cellular signal can weaken as radios enter a low-power state. That can make a bad spot worse.

5. A case that traps heat

iFixit says a full-wrap case can trap heat and suggests removing it, noting that iPhones have no fan and must shed heat passively. If your phone only overheats while cased, you’ve found your fix.

6. Software, updates and restores

A new iOS version, a poorly optimized app, or a restore from backup can keep the phone busy in the background. iFixit advises updating the software, since a newer version may fix a poorly optimized app.

7. A failing battery

Batteries create heat as energy moves in and out. iFixit says an old or failing battery may generate more heat than normal, and notes that Apple’s guideline treats capacity below 80% as needing service.

You can check this yourself in Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If it says Service, that’s a strong clue.

How do you cool down an overheated iPhone fast?

Follow these steps in order.

• Unplug the phone. Charging adds heat, so remove it from any charger.
• Take off the case. Let the metal and glass release heat directly.
• Move to shade or a cooler room. Apple’s own advice for a warning screen is to turn the device off, move it away from direct sunlight, and let it cool.
• Close heavy apps. Quit games, navigation and cloud syncing.
• Turn on Low Power Mode, or turn the phone off for 10–15 minutes.
• Wait before charging again. Charge only when it feels normal.

Gentle airflow helps. A fan or an air-conditioned room is fine.

What NOT to do

Skip the “quick cooling” shortcuts.

• Don’t put the phone in the fridge or freezer. iFixit warns that thermal shock can crack the front or back glass, and that rapid cooling attracts condensation. ZDNet’s guidance makes the same point, saying fast cooling can also damage the battery.
• Don’t keep charging a phone that’s hot to the touch.
• Don’t wrap it in a towel while it’s on.
• Don’t ignore repeat warnings. One hot day is weather. A pattern is a symptom.

What does “iPhone needs to cool down” actually mean?

iOS has a ladder of protections. You may see more than one as the temperature rises.

• Reduced performance. Apple says charging slows or stops, the display dims or goes dark, signal may weaken, and the flash may be disabled when the interior is too warm.
• Charging On Hold. The lock screen says charging will resume when the phone returns to a normal temperature. This protects the battery and fixes itself once the phone cools.
• Temperature warning screen. This is the serious one. Apple says a phone showing it may still make emergency calls, and that you should turn it off, move it somewhere cooler, and let it cool.
• Restore Paused. If the phone gets too hot while restoring from iCloud, the restore pauses and resumes on its own after cooling.

If you see the warning screen, treat it as Red in the triage table.

Is an overheating iPhone dangerous?

Usually no. iPhones are built to protect themselves, and most heat events end with a slowdown, not a hazard. But heat does cause long-term wear. Apple says using a device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

A swollen battery is different. It’s the one case where you should act fast. Watch for:

• A screen lifting along one edge
• Discolouration on part of the display (iFixit mentions localized discoloration on one side of the screen as a warning sign)
• A phone that sits unevenly on a table
• A burning or chemical smell

If you see any of these, stop using the phone, don’t charge it, don’t press on the screen, and get it to a repair professional. Lithium-ion batteries can be hazardous if damaged.

iOS 26 settings that help

Recent versions of iOS give you more control over heat and battery wear.

Setting	What it does
Low Power Mode	Cuts background activity so the phone works less hard.
Adaptive Power	Makes small tweaks like lowering brightness and slowing background tasks, and is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and newer.
Charge Limit	Caps charging at 80%. Lower charge levels mean less stress on the battery.

Adaptive Power is switched on by default on iPhone 17 models. If your phone feels sluggish and warm and you didn’t turn anything on, check Settings > Battery > Power Mode.

Also check Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off for apps you don’t need running in the background.

Do newer iPhones overheat less?

Often, yes, with one caveat.

Apple added vapor chamber cooling to the iPhone 17 Pro, after years of heat complaints on recent flagship models. Early reviewers expected it to run noticeably cooler under load. But no cooling system removes heat completely. Hot sun, a thick case and a failing battery will still push any phone into the Amber zone.

If you own an older model, such as an iPhone 12 Pro, heat during long gaming sessions is a common complaint in Apple’s own forum. Short sessions and a case-free phone help.

When should you get it repaired in Canada?

Get it checked if any of these are true:

• It overheats often, even with light use, in a cool room
• Battery Health shows Service, or capacity is below 80%
• The phone shuts down, restarts, or drains quickly while hot
• You see any swelling signs
• A warning screen keeps coming back

Your options in Canada are Apple (an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider) or an independent repair shop. If you have AppleCare+, ask first, since battery service may be covered.

On cost, prices vary by model and change often. As one data point, a September 2026 report listed Apple’s out-of-warranty battery service for the iPhone 18 Pro in Canada at $179, up $14 from the year before. Always confirm the current price for your model on Apple Canada’s repair page before you book.

One more tip. iFixit says sensors near the charge port are a common trigger for false warnings, and that board-level faults are best handled by specialist repair shops. If the battery checks out but the phone still runs hot, ask a technician to test the charge port and sensors.

What I’d check first (practical expert insight)

When a client says “my iPhone is always hot,” I’d run this order, from cheapest to most expensive:

• Case and sun: Remove the case and test in the shade. This solves a surprising share of complaints.
• Charger: Try a different cable and an Apple-certified or reputable charger.
• Battery Health: Look for the Service message.
• Software: Update iOS and your heaviest apps.
• Signal: See if the heat only happens in weak-coverage spots.
• Hardware: Only then book a repair.

Flag for you: add the client’s real repair-shop observations here, such as most common cause, average turnaround, or Canadian seasonal spikes, to turn this into genuine first-hand evidence.

Conclusion

A warm iPhone is usually normal. Use the Heat Triage check: Green means keep going, Amber means unplug, un-case and cool it, and Red means turn it off and get help. Never use a fridge. If it overheats often or Battery Health shows Service, book a battery check.

FAQs

Is it normal for my iPhone to get hot?

Yes, in the right situations. Charging, restoring from a backup, updating iOS, gaming and streaming all warm the phone. If it cools afterwards and works normally, you’re in the Green zone.

Why does my iPhone get hot while charging?

Charging moves energy into the battery, which creates heat. Wireless charging adds more, and a case can trap it. Unplug it, remove the case, and charge in a cooler spot.

Can an overheating iPhone explode?

It’s very unlikely, because iPhones have built-in protections. The real risk is a damaged or swollen battery. If you see swelling, a burning smell, or a lifting screen, stop using the phone and get it serviced.

Should I put my hot iPhone in the fridge or freezer?

No. Rapid cooling can cause condensation and can crack the glass through thermal shock. Turn it off and let it cool in shade at room temperature instead.

Does overheating damage the battery permanently?

It can. Apple says that using an iPhone in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. Occasional warmth is fine, but repeated overheating adds up.

Does iOS 26 make iPhones overheat?

Some users notice extra heat right after a big update because the phone is busy in the background, and Apple says that is normal. If heat continues for days, check battery usage and Adaptive Power, and update to the latest iOS patch.
