What to do in the first 10 minutes
What you do right after the phone gets wet matters more than anything we do later. Follow these steps in order:
- Get it out of the liquid and power it off. Hold the side button and slide to power off if the screen responds. If it doesn’t, leave it alone.
- Don’t plug it in. Apple warns that charging a wet port can corrode the charging pins. Power running through a wet board speeds up corrosion.
- If you see a “Liquid Detected” alert, unplug the cable from both ends. Gently tap the phone against your palm with the port facing down, then leave it somewhere dry with airflow for up to 24 hours.
- Wipe the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth. Take off the case.
- Leave the SIM tray closed if the phone is dripping wet. Opening it can let water in toward the board.
- Bring it to us the same day if you can. Even if it seems to work, corrosion can still be forming inside.
What not to do: don’t put it in rice, don’t use a hair dryer or compressed air, don’t poke anything into the port, and don’t keep pressing buttons to “test” it. Apple specifically advises against rice, heat and compressed air.
Why water damage keeps getting worse after the phone dries
Water on its own isn’t always the problem. The damage that follows is. When liquid reaches the logic board, it reacts with the metal on component pins and traces. That reaction is corrosion, and it keeps going as long as moisture, minerals and electrical power are present. A phone that powers on today can fail days or weeks later as corrosion spreads under the chips.
The liquid matters too. Clean water is the best case. Salt water, pool water, coffee, juice and soda leave salts, chlorine or sugars behind that attract moisture and corrode faster. Tell us what the liquid was when you bring the phone in, since it changes how we clean it.
Newer iPhones are water-resistant, not waterproof. Apple rates iPhone 12 and later for up to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes in laboratory conditions, and the seals wear with age, drops, heat and previous repairs. Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover liquid damage. We see damaged phones that carry an IP rating because the seal had already failed.

You can often spot the liquid contact indicator in the SIM tray slot. It’s normally white or silver and turns red after contact with liquid. A red indicator means water got in, but a white one doesn’t prove the phone is clean, so a symptom still needs a diagnosis.

1. Diagnosis

2. Disconnect and open
We disconnect the battery first to stop current running through wet circuits, then remove the display and internal parts so each component can be inspected and cleaned individually.
3. Cleaning

4. Component repair or replacement

Three realistic outcomes
Nobody can promise a water-damaged phone will come back. We’ll tell you where yours stands after the diagnosis. In practice it usually falls into one of three groups:
- Cleaning only. Caught early, with no board damage. Cleaning and drying restored normal operation. This is the best result and the one that favours acting quickly.
- Component repair. One or more parts, such as the port, battery, speaker or display, need replacing, sometimes with board-level repair.
- Not economical to repair. The board damage is too extensive, or the cost passes the value of the phone. We’ll say so plainly and talk through your options, including recovering your data and trading in or replacing the phone.
Apple’s community forums often say a water-damaged iPhone “can’t be repaired.” Apple’s own service will usually offer a replacement rather than a repair. Independent technicians work at component level, which is why many phones that Apple would swap can still be saved.

Is it worth repairing, or should you replace the phone?
Compare the quote with what a replacement would cost you, not only the phone’s price. Repair is usually worth it when the phone is a recent model, the fault is limited to one or two components, or the data on it matters.
