Face ID usually fails after a screen replacement because the TrueDepth camera system was blocked, disconnected, damaged, or never matched to your iPhone. Start with free checks: clean the notch, remove the protector, restart, and reset Face ID. If it still says “not available,” the problem is hardware or pairing, not settings.

Why Face ID breaks after a screen replacement

The screen and Face ID are different parts. They are close neighbours, though.

Face ID relies on the TrueDepth camera system at the top of your iPhone. It projects invisible dots and reads them with an infrared camera. During a screen swap, a technician works right next to those parts. A small slip can break the chain.

One repair shop explains that the TrueDepth system, the sensors near the top of the display and the small flex cables around them are all easy to disturb during a screen swap. That is why your display and touch can work perfectly while Face ID is completely dead.

There is a second layer too. Apple builds some parts to work with the specific phone they were installed in. iFixit’s testing found that Apple appears to pair each screen to the iPhone it ships on. Moving the Face ID hardware from the original display to a replacement did not clear the warning.

So the cause is not always “a broken part.” Sometimes everything is physically fine and the phone just doesn’t trust the repair.

The 4-Layer Face ID Check: Block, Seat, Pair, Fault

Most post-repair failures fall into one of four layers. Think of them as a ladder, from easiest to hardest to fix.

• Block: Something is covering the sensors. Examples are a bad screen protector, adhesive residue, dust, a case lip, or smudges.
• Seat: A connector or flex cable was not fully reconnected, or it is under tension.
• Pair: A part was replaced or reused, and the phone doesn’t recognize it as matched to the device.
• Fault: Something is physically damaged, either during this repair or by an earlier drop or liquid exposure that the repair only exposed.

The shop above lists the same set of causes: damage to the sensor assembly, a poorly seated connector, an obstruction near the notch, and incomplete calibration. It also includes an older hidden fault that the screen swap revealed.

You can work through these layers yourself, starting at layer one.

How to tell which problem you have

This is a triage guide, not a medical-grade diagnosis. Use it to decide your next move.

What you see	Most likely layer	What to do next
Face ID works only sometimes, or fails in odd positions	Block	Clean the top of the screen. Remove the case and protector.
“Face ID Not Available” appears right after the repair	Seat, Pair, or Fault	Try the free checks below, then return to the repair shop.
True Tone is missing and Parts and Service History shows “Unknown”	Pair	Ask the shop about the display type and calibration.
Selfie camera works but Face ID is dead	Seat or Fault	Don’t assume the front camera proves the TrueDepth system is healthy.
Reset Face ID does nothing and the message keeps coming back	Seat, Pair, or Fault	Stop troubleshooting settings and get a hardware inspection.
“Face ID has been disabled”	Fault	This message means Apple has detected an issue with the TrueDepth camera. Book a service diagnosis.

True Tone is a useful warning sign. iFixit reports that True Tone is lost with any display swap not done by Apple or with specialist chip-programming tools. If True Tone vanished at the same time as Face ID, a pairing issue becomes more likely.

Free checks to try first

These steps come from Apple’s own Face ID guidance and cost nothing.

• Clean the top of the screen. Wipe the notch or Dynamic Island area with a soft, clean cloth.
• Remove the case and screen protector. Apple says nothing can block the TrueDepth camera, and that residue, dirt, a case, or a protector over it can stop Face ID.
• Restart your iPhone and enter your passcode.
• Update iOS if an update is waiting.
• Reset Face ID. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID, then set it up again. Apple says that if your camera isn’t working and you can’t set up Face ID, you might need service.
• Check your face position. Hold the phone at arm’s length or closer, in portrait orientation on most models, and look straight at it.

What not to do:

• Don’t install “Face ID fixer” apps. They cannot repair hardware.
• Don’t factory reset immediately. It won’t fix a pairing or connector problem and can cost you time.
• Don’t keep repeating setup and hoping. If setup fails twice in the same way, the hardware state is the issue.

What does Parts and Service History say?

This screen is one of the quickest ways to see what your iPhone thinks about the repair.

On iPhone 11 models and later (excluding the 2nd and 3rd generation iPhone SE), you can scroll to Parts and Service History if your iPhone has been repaired.

How to check it:

• Open Settings > General > About.
• Scroll down to Parts and Service History. It only appears if the phone has been repaired.
• Look next to Display and any other repaired part.

If the repair used genuine Apple parts and processes, you’ll see “Genuine.” If not, you may see an “Unknown Part” message.

What the result means for Face ID:

• “Genuine” next to Display: The display is less likely to be your Face ID problem. Look harder at Block and Seat.
• “Unknown Part”: The phone is flagging the display. This fits the Pair layer, though it doesn’t prove your Face ID failure comes from it.
• No history entry at all: Not every repair shows up here. Don’t treat a blank as proof of a clean repair.

Apple says a non-genuine display can cause compatibility or performance problems, and True Tone may not work correctly.

Can Face ID be fixed after a screen replacement?

Often, yes. It depends on the layer.

Block: Fixable in minutes. Clean it, remove the accessory, and test again.

Seat: Fixable by reopening the phone. The repair shop above notes this is one of the few cases where reopening the phone and correcting the assembly can solve the problem. The sooner you go back, the better, because the shop that did the work knows what they touched.

Pair: The hardest to predict. Online forums disagree sharply here. One community reply says Face ID and True Tone will never work again after a non-authorized repair. Another says Face ID fails if the original module wasn’t transferred or was damaged in the transfer. Treat both as unverified opinion. What is certain is that the cause is unclear until a technician with the right tools inspects the phone.

Fault: Settings can’t fix it. Once the TrueDepth hardware is physically damaged, the repair becomes specialized and sometimes uneconomical.

Apple’s repair route

Apple has a path most guides don’t mention. Apple Stores and authorized providers got access to a TrueDepth Camera service part containing the Face ID and front camera modules, which allows repairs without replacing the whole phone. The program was later expanded to include the iPhone X, so every Face ID-capable iPhone was covered. Apple’s list of countries where it is not available did not include Canada.

That information is a few years old. Confirm current availability with Apple or an authorized provider before relying on it.

Model differences

Reports vary by iPhone generation. Some community posts describe the problem on iPhone 11 and 13, and one repair-supplier video claims a third-party screen on an iPhone 13 will lose Face ID. Those are anecdotes, not Apple statements. Ask your technician about your exact model rather than trusting a generic rule.

What does Face ID repair cost in Canada?

The exact fee depends on your model, the diagnosis, and who does the work. Check Apple Canada’s repair page or call an authorized provider for a current quote.

Here is how Apple structures it. Apple’s screen-repair price applies only to screen damage. If your iPhone has other damage that isn’t limited to the screen, the “Other damage” fee applies. A Face ID fault found during a diagnosis could land in the higher category, so ask Apple which fee applies before you agree.

For a sense of the gap, here is one recent Canadian example:

• On the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Canada lists screen damage at $429 and “other damage” at $1,169 (before tax).

Treat that as a single data point for one model, not a price for yours.

Ways to lower the bill:

• AppleCare+ reduces incident fees. One report lists per-incident fees of $29 for screen or back glass damage and $99 for other accidental damage (U.S. figures). Confirm Canadian terms before buying.
• Credit card coverage can help in some cases. Some cards offer extended warranty coverage that can include accidental damage. Read your card’s terms.
• Go back to the original shop first. If the damage came from their repair, ask them to fix it at no charge.

What to ask your repair shop

If a shop did the screen swap, start the conversation there. These questions keep it factual.

• What kind of display did you install? Genuine Apple, OEM-grade, or aftermarket?
• Did you move or replace any Face ID or front-sensor parts?
• Did you test Face ID before handing the phone back? Ask whether they have a record.
• Is there a warranty, and does it cover Face ID? Get the answer in writing.
• Can you inspect the connectors and flex cables again?
• If you can’t fix it, will you refund the repair or cover the cost of an authorized diagnosis?

On warranties: Apple’s own Canadian repair terms carry a 90-day warranty on service performed. Independent shops set their own terms. Rules on consumer protection also vary by province, so check with your provincial consumer office if the shop refuses to help. I’m not a lawyer, and this isn’t legal advice.

Living without Face ID in the meantime

You can still use your iPhone while you sort this out.

• Use your passcode. Make it a strong one, not 1234.
• Check your banking and payment apps. Many ask for a passcode or login when Face ID is unavailable.
• Keep Apple Pay working. You may need to authenticate with your passcode.
• Don’t delay the repair if you handle sensitive work. A typed passcode in public is easier for others to see.

Expert insight: what a repair desk sees

[INSERT: first-hand data from the agency or client’s repair desk.] Suggested content: roughly how many Face ID complaints they see after screen swaps, the share that turn out to be Block or Seat problems versus Pair or Fault, and one anonymized case example (iPhone model, symptom, what fixed it). Do not publish estimates as facts. Add only numbers the business can stand behind.

Conclusion

Face ID not working after a screen replacement is often related to damage, incorrect installation, or problems with the iPhone’s original Face ID components. Because Face ID relies on a paired TrueDepth camera system, replacing or damaging certain components can prevent it from working normally. Before assuming the repair failed, check the software settings, restart the iPhone, and make sure the front sensor area is clean and unobstructed. If Face ID still does not work, a qualified repair technician or Apple Support can help identify whether the issue requires further hardware repair or calibration.

FAQs

Why did Face ID stop working after my screen replacement?

The cause is usually a blocked sensor, a loose or damaged flex cable, an unmatched part, or a hidden fault the repair revealed. Because the failure started right after the repair, the repair is the first place to look.

Can Face ID be fixed after a screen replacement?

Often yes. Blocked or poorly seated parts are the easiest to fix. Pairing issues and physical damage need a technician with the right tools, and Apple has offered repair without full-phone replacement.

Does replacing an iPhone screen always break Face ID?

No. Reports vary by model and by who did the repair. Use your own phone’s symptoms and Parts and Service History rather than assuming the worst.

What does “Face ID Not Available” mean?

It means the phone can’t use the TrueDepth system right now. If it keeps returning after a restart and Face ID reset, treat it as a hardware or pairing problem.

Is Face ID tied to the screen?

Not directly, but screens and related parts can be matched to the phone, and a replacement can break that match. iFixit’s testing points to pairing at the display level.

Can I fix Face ID with a Reset Face ID or an app?

Reset Face ID is worth one try. Apps can’t repair hardware or pairing, so skip them.

Who can fix Face ID in Canada?

Start with the shop that did the screen swap, then an Apple Store or authorized provider. Ask for a diagnosis and a quote before agreeing to any work.
